Talking With Voters Over Coffee

A conservative friend of mine here in Merrimack was saying that these articles were biased and that I was not getting the true spectrum of opinion in town, that taxes were a much bigger issue than what I was reporting, and that I should go down to the DW Diner and talk to a voter about how important taxes were to them.

So one day before canvassing, I went there, bought a cup of coffee at the bar, and started a discussion with the guy sitting next to me.

He had lived in Merrimack since 1982, but never had been very politically active, so he did not have alot to say about taxes or any issue for that matter as he stated he didn't really care. His advice to me was to become a good liar, since all politicians were liars in his opinion.

However, since I had come here looking to see if taxes were truly an issue to voters, he asked his friend who was a regular at the restaurant and was a few stools over.

The friend was a white haired fellow who happened to be from Salem, but came to Merrimack often for work and actually said he would be glad to pay more taxes if something could be done about their sewer system as long as the figure wasn't more than a three or four thousand dollars more a year.
