At one door while canvassing I had an interesting discussion with a conservative. Here's a rough transcript.
Me: Hello, my name is Andrew Sylvia, and i'm running for State Rep. I just wanted to introduce myself, and I was wondering if there was anything I could tell you about myself or if there was anything I can tell you where I stand on.
Conservative: I don't know, where do you stand on the issues?
Me: That depends, are there any issues in particular you're concerned about? There are alot of issues facing our state this year.
Conservative: Whatever first comes to your mind.
Me: Well, on the last street, I talked to someone about second amendment rights, and I believe that the best way to reduce gun violence is not to limit peoples' rights to bear firearms, but to respect firearms, protect the constitutional right to own firearms while advocating that they shouldn't be fired for self defense when alternatives are available.
Conservative: Ok, let's cut to the chase, where do you stand on taxes?
Me: I see taxes no differently than I see war. Taxes should only be raised when all other budgetary options have been exhausted no differently than when war should happen only when all diplomatic options have been exhausted. Neither is something that should be celebrated, but both are sometimes unfortunately necessary, although I hope for the day when they are not.
Conservative: Well, i'm sorry Andrew, but I can't vote for you because of that. I believe that taxes should never be raised under any circumstances, and I don't think they are similiar to war. War is what let you be here today.
Me: That's fine sir, and I respect your opinion, but i'll have to agree to disagree. If you'll look behind me past your very nice lawn, you can see that it is in fact roads that have gotten me here. Roads that were paid for by taxes....
Conservative: Ok then, good luck Andrew.
Me: Thank you for your time!
